James Goodwin

Where did you study music? I studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I’m continuing my studies on the Orchestral Artistry Programme for my masters.

What is your favourite piece of music? My favourite piece of music would have to be Shostakovich’s 10th symphony, the clarinet solo at the beginning is just such an emotive tune, along with the terrifying but thrilling second movement, it makes for an amazing listen. It also happens to be the first symphony I ever played with my youth orchestra growing up, so I’m not sure whether that has made me biased…!

What single thing could you not live without? A single thing that I could not live without would have to be my diary! If I lose that I’m lost!

Who has inspired you the most? Growing up I had my father, who played the trombone in the army, so I always listened to him playing. Along with my father both my older brother and my identical twin brother played the trombone too, so I suppose my biggest inspiration would be family!

Where did you grow up? I grew up in south England, near Winchester in the county of Hampshire.
