Our History

Since 2007 Music In Offices has provided musical solutions to business problems

A Brief History of Music in Offices

2007 at MIO

In 2007, Tessa Marchington was completing her studies at the Royal Academy of Music, when she was struck by the contrast in her environment to that of her brother’s working in a law firm as a graduate. Tessa recalls that moment – “If their employees could play the guitar once a week or sing in a choir, it might relieve a bit of the stress, and foster a more creative and collaborative environment.” An enlightened partner loved the idea and within 3 weeks there were over 20 employees taking instrumental lessons.

Music in Offices was born and had it’s first client, Norton Rose Fulbright. Peter Martyr, CEO says; “The positive impact that music-making has on our business and it’s people is significant. It brings many benefits, in terms of productivity and effective working relationships as well as external networking and brand profile.”

We launched the first EVER Office Choir of the Year Competition. With 19 office choirs taking part in venues including Kings Place, the winners this year were Rhinegold Publishing (established category) and Norton Rose Fulbright (beg category). Office Choir of the Year has quickly become our headlining event. Held bi-annually, this event provides a stage for participating employees of office choirs to meet and compete against each other. For more information and to relive our past competitions head to the Office Choir of the Year page here.

2011 & 2012 at MIO

In 2011 we rethought the strategy of MIO, expanding our programmes, offering team building activities and more performance opportunities. We partnered with the City of London Festival for exciting performances across the city and revealed our new, re-branded look with an updated logo and colours. In 2012 we were Finalists in the Education Category of a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award.

We have been lucky enough to have featured press in many established publications as Office Choir of the Year continued to grow and our roster of clients all embracing music as part of their workplace culture grew. One of the highlights was being featured in the Sunday Times.

2015 at MIO

In 2015, we were honoured to join the London Choral Sinfonia, and many other performers, to celebrate the 50th jubilee celebration of  Contact the Elderly. The concert was held at the beautiful venue of St. Paul’s, where after performances guests dined in the crypts.

2016 at MIO

2016 was a busy year for us with our choirs performing at lots of prestigious venues across the Capital including Cadogan Hall and St John’s Smith Square. Our Leadership Programmes were introduced to the SLG at Lloyds Banking Group, and we have been invited back to Citi as part of their Diversity Week programmes.

We were proud to be Finalists in the National Business Awards 2016!

As we continue to grow we have launched new choirs at London ZSL, A+E Networks and BACB. We have expanded our programmes to include samba drumming sessions, ensemble classes, collaboration classes and SongWriting Clubs.

We had a successful BIG Sing event with ABRSM in the city led by the fantastic Dominic Peckham and have become a network partner of the Culture Mile initiative and look forward to developing plans with them over the year.

We started this year celebrating with a 10 year Birthday Bash with WildKat PR at the RSA. A fun way to bring together our conductors, teachers, clients and friends. With a Learn to Uke corner, badge making station, games and plenty of wine it was a fun night!

This year we are continuing to expand our clients bringing music into new companies including LSR Suntory and The Royal Lancaster Hotel. Let’s get the city singing!!
