Hong Kong-born British violinist Benedict Wong has performed across the U.K., Asia and North America. Benedict is a graduate of Durham University and is now completing his postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama as a scholar.
Benedict begun his studies at the age of 4 with Li Wing-Shun and Ling Chen. At the age of 13, Benedict achieved his DipABRSM with distinction and a year later, achieved his LTCL.
Benedict is privileged to have learnt with Rafael Lopez Bolivar and Iona Brown, he currently studies with Simon Blendis.
At all levels of education, Benedict has enjoyed many opportunities playing and leading in orchestras. As a first year, he led Durham University Orchestral Society’s Chamber Orchestra, performing at Sage Gateshead alongside Sir Thomas Allen. Since joining Guildhall, he has co-led the Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast (Barbican) and String Ensemble’s concert with András Keller (Milton Court). Recent engagements include guest-leading Hertfordshire Chamber Orchestra and performing with London Musical Theatre Orchestra at Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
Benedict is an avid chamber musician, and has studied with distinguished performers such as Rainer Schmidt, Adrian Brendel, Ursula Smith, Ralf Gothoni, Jacqueline Ross, Sam Armstrong and members of the Hagan, Heath and Endellion Quartet.
Benedict had previously been an orchestral mentee of the Royal Opera House; he was recently invited back to rehearse under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano. Benedict has featured in masterclasses with Leonidas Kavakos, Wolfgang Redik and Rainer Schmidt.
Part of Benedict’s performing life is singing as a choral bass. Previously, he sang at Durham Cathedral as choral scholar, with whom he featured in BBC Radio 3 broadcasts. He is privileged to have received vocal coaching from Roderick Williams and Gary Coward.
Benedict is enjoying an increasingly busy schedule teaching violin in the city. Previously, he has staffed at the Virtuoso International Music Academy and Rodolfus Choral Course, teaching and mentoring young musicians.
