Born in Morelia, Mexico Gerardo studied viola at the Conservatorio de las Rosas with Maestra Gellya Dubrova before gaining a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music under Jonathan Barritt. He has taken part in masterclasses with Maxim Rysanov, Pablo de Pedro Cano, Brodsky Quartet and the Henschel Quartet. As an orchestral musician Gerardo has played under conductors such as Vladimir Jurowski, John Wilson and Ed Gardiner, and he previously held the position of co-principal viola of the Michoacan State Symphony Orchestra.

Gerardo was a member of the Cuyos Quartet from 2008 to 2014 with whom he won first prize at San Miguel de Allende Festival and toured to Argentina, USA, Mexico and Europe. Other chamber music highlights have included Weber Quintet with Professor Colin Lawson and Pommersfelden Summer Academy in Germany.

Gerardo is much in demand as a multi-instrumentalist and teacher: he currently teaches viola in the Extension programme at the Royal College of Music Junior Department and teaches piano, violin, guitar, ukulele, harp and cello privately. Outreach work has included Chambertots at Wigmore Hall, Triborough Music Hub, ABRSM, RCM Sparks, BBC Proms, Red Cross Refugee projects with Music Action International as well as a wide variety of projects in Mexico, particularly Niños Músicos por la Paz.

Gerardo is grateful to have been supported in his studies by the H.M.D. Meyer Violin Prize and plays a viola made by mexican luthier Jonathan Flores.
